67 Hail Hail looks at the best goalkeepers to have played for Celtic over the years.

The position of goalkeeper is the most important in the side and sets the foundations for success.

Celtic are lucky enough to have had a number of stars between the sticks over the years, and some who have become heroes at Parkhead.

So, with that, here is our list of the best Celtic goalkeepers of all time.

Ronnie Simpson

It would be impossible to start this list without a member of the Lisbon Lions.

As far as legends go, Ronnie Simpson arrived at the back end of his career, but proved to be one of the most valuable additions to the Hoops side.

Jock Stein signed Simpson for Celtic from Hibernian before swapping Edinburgh for Glasgow, and the two were very successful.

Five league titles, two League Cups, one Scottish Cup and a European Cup were won during that time, and a fantastic 91 clean sheets in 188 games is the best in Celtic history.

Pat Bonner

No goalkeeper has made more appearances for Celtic than Pat Bonner.

He held the fort in goal for over 20 years after fittingly making his debut on St Patrick’s Day against Motherwell.

The rest was history as the ‘keeper helped the Hoops go on to win five league titles, five Scottish Cups, and two League Cups across that period.

Bonner immersed himself in the Celtic culture from day one, and to this day, is regarded as a legend.

Artur Boruc

After being forced to bring Artur Boruc in on loan to start with, the Poland international then remained on a permanent basis for over £1m.

Boruc ended up being nicknamed the ‘Holy goalie’ for his performances, which included an unreal penalty save to deny Louis Saha in a famous Champions League win against Manchester United.

The Hoops star’s time was not without some controversies, but after over 200 appearances for the club, he left to join Fiorentina in 2010.

Fraser Forster

Fraser Forster was given the chance to take the number one shirt during his two-year loan spell at Parkhead.

Forster was a huge part of the Neil Lennon era and was in goal for that famous night against Barcelona in the Champions League.

Scott Brown said Forster is the best goalkeeper he played with, and he rightfully deserves a place on the list of the best goalkeepers.

Honourable mentions

While there may be four names in the list of the best of all time, there are still some goalkeepers that deserve an honourable mention.

John Thompson was regarded by many as a brilliant goalkeeper in the early 1900s and was tipped to be a huge success. Sadly, he lost his life during a Glasgow derby fixture after he collided with a Rangers player in 1931.

Other goalkeepers also include Rab Douglas, who was the number one for the majority of Martin O’Neill’s tenure. While Douglas certainly wasn’t in the same bracket as the others on the list, he did keep over 80 clean sheets for the Bhoys.
