Celtic are through to the group stages of the UEFA Europa League after a 3-2 aggregate win over AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands tonight.

Holding a two-goal lead heading into the match, Celtic were always favourites to progress. However, as expected, AZ made it far from easy.

Celtic were put under serious pressure by the home side, despite the Bhoys going a goal up within minutes of kick-off.

In fact, at times we seriously rode our luck and AZ could have well gone through on another night. The fact remains though, they didn’t. Celtic improved massively from the hour mark and in the end did what was required to book their place in the competition proper.

One of the best performers on the evening was young Adam Montgomery, who was thrown in at the deep end as a substitute. Greg Taylor injured his shoulder in the first half, with the teenager preferred to Boli Bolingoli.

He played his role competently and really stepped up for the club at crucial moments. Confident in the tackle, as well as when playing the ball out from the back, the teenager impressed.

It’s a great sign his development is going well. If he can perform like this against a top Dutch side, he should be capable of playing regularly against Scottish Premiership outfits.

He could even be required on Sunday against Rangers, with Taylor’s injury status unknown.

Well done Adam!
