Celtic came crashing down to earth on Tuesday night in Kazakhstan.
It wasn’t pleasant for Brendan Rodgers and his players, but not many can argue that Celtic’s Champions League exit wasn’t deserved.
Many would argue that Celtic’s penalty shootout defeat to Kairat Almaty was on the cards, and some saw it a mile off because the performance was beyond woeful.
There were several outlets commenting on the game, including the BBC for their radio coverage, and something was noticed with one of the Kairat Almaty players.

Luis Mata’s foul throws for Kairat Almaty against Celtic
Even before Celtic landed in Almaty, fans were already frustrated because of how the 2025 summer transfer window had been panning out, including the first-leg performance in Glasgow.
So, by extra time, you can understand the feeling, as the BBC commentator on Radio Scotland noticed the number of ‘foul throws’ by Almaty defender Luis Mata that were never penalised.
“A throw-in to the home side,” stated the BBC commentator. “Luis Mata has taken, I would say, about half a dozen foul throws in this game, and not once has he been penalised for it.”
Celtic have themselves to blame for Champions League exit
Celtic. The board. The manager and the players are the ones to blame for this, and it’s deserved.
Everyone is going to take a verbal beating for their actions, and even though Celtic won the double last season, they have to take the criticism and try to move forward.
The best and basic way of doing that is by clearing the domestic trophies again, and then there is the small matter of the Europa League.
