Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has explained why he gave Johnny Kenny his first start against Aberdeen.

Celtic hammered Aberdeen in their final home game of the season as Brendan Rodgers rang the changes at Pittodrie last night.

Celtic’s starting XI included the likes of Maik Nawrocki, Luke McCowan and Hyunjun Yang as Rodgers looked to give many of his first-team players a well-earned rest.

However, many fans may have thought this was the perfect opportunity to give Adam Idah another start but Rodgers opted to give young Johnny Kenny the nod and here, the Celtic manager explains why.

Brendan Rodgers was excited to give Johnny Kenny his first Celtic start

Adam Idah has been in excellent form for Celtic and has scored in his last four games for the club so it made sense to give him a start at Pittodrie.

However, Kenny got the chance and he took it and here, Rodgers explains his reason why.

Rodgers told BBC Sportsound, “I mentioned before the Hibs game that we’d be rotating the squad to get minutes into the legs of some players, so we’re in a strong position for the cup final.

“Our job in the league was done. I trust the players to come in and play and on top of that, I’m looking forward to seeing Johnny Kenny play.

“It’s always a challenging game at Pittodrie, so that’s what we’re prepared for.”

The young Irish striker is contracted to the end of next season. With a career total of 42 goals in 136 first-team appearances, at 21 Kenny has his best years ahead of him.

Will that be at Celtic, after last night’s performance at Pittodrie, the young striker has done his chances of having a long-term career at Parkhead no harm at all.
