Brendan Rodgers has talked up Rocco Vata’s potential after the youngster scored his first goal for Celtic earlier today.
Vata was named as a surprise substitute for the resounding 5-0 Scottish Cup win over Buckie Thistle at Celtic Park, despite significant rumours about his future at the Bhoys.
He is out of contract at the end of the season and several teams are said to be interested in his signature.
However, he came into the match in the 64th minute, replacing Kyogo Furuhashi and finding the back of the net.
Yes, Buckie are Highland League opposition, but it was heartening to see him score his first senior goal for the club regardless.
Rocco Vata stakes a claim at Celtic
After the match, Bhoys boss Rodgers said [Viaplay Sport]: “For Rocco, he’s played before. He has potential, he needs a lot of work. He has some really good attributes, he’s strong, he’s got decent pace and he wants to score goals.
“It’s all about discipline for young players – doing the work, having the right attitude. It’s nice for him, to get that feeling of scoring. He’s been here since he was a kid. It was a great moment for him and his family.”

With recent reports also indicating Vata may well be in renewed contract talks with the Bhoys, there’s hope that he could still commit his long-term future to the club. [Sky Sports]
Today could well have been a significant moment in that regard. To be selected and involved alongside established first-team stars is a sign that Rodgers does rate him.
Having experienced his first goal for Celtic, hopefully, it’s just given him a thirst for more.
