Callum McGregor rejects blame for Kasper Schmeichel after Celtic’s loss to VfB Stuttgart

The knives are out for Kasper Schmeichel at Celtic, and he has nowhere to hide.

The issue here is that this isn’t the first time Schmeichel has been error-prone, but the Stuttgart loss was another chapter in the story of Celtic’s declining number one goalkeeper.

Many are pointing the finger at Schmeichel following Celtic’s Europa League loss to Stuttgart, but not Callum McGregor, who insists ‘there is no blame’ at the keeper’s door because he has been ‘amazing’ since he signed in 2024.

You could argue that at least two of the goals conceded by the Hoops were the fault of Schmeichel’s, as there is now a bigger spotlight under his name than ever before.

Callum McGregor defends Kasper Schmeichel after another error-prone night for Celtic

Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, McGregor was correct in stating that ‘everyone is all in together’, and that is the same when you win or lose.

But the Celtic skipper coming to the aid of Schmeichel probably won’t sit well with the critics because they now want him dropped from the XI.

“Everyone makes mistakes,” said McGregor. “Everyone has off nights. Kasper has been amazing since he came to the club. A really, really big part of our success. A big, big player in the dressing room for us as well.

“He will dust that down and go again. We are all the same. Everyone is all in together. Everyone is a team, and we lose as a team. There is no blame in terms of any of the players looking at him. He has made so many big saves for us.

“As I said, he will bounce back, for sure.”

McGregor is insistent that Celtic still had belief

There came a period in the second half, when Stuttgart were leading 3-1, where the Celtic players were moving around the pitch like the game had well and truly gone.

You even had Joe Hart screaming in commentary and reminding the players that there was a second leg to play for, before Tiago Tomas added insult to injury by netting a fourth for his side, and now killing off the tie.

But McGregor was insistent that Celtic were still playing with belief, and that was proven when Julian Araujo nearly scored right at the death.

“I think we nearly scored at the last kick of the ball,” responded McGregor on whether Celtic still had belief towards the end of the game.

“Yeah, I think so. The momentum of the game, it swung. We were on top, then lose a goal. Then try to build momentum again.

“I think even at the end, we were 4-1 down and we still created a chance right near the last minute to try and pull it back. For sure, it’s a difficult night, and we have to lick our wounds a little bit.”
