Celtic defender Carl Starfelt feels ready to get in amongst the action immediately at the Bhoys and make his debut on Saturday away to Hearts.

The club have been struck by defensive crisis this summer after a failure to plan properly, a suspension and an injury.

The arrival of Starfelt is a huge boost to Ange Postecoglou’s options and the Swedish international is keen to get involved as soon as possible.

Speaking to the Celtic website he said: “I think everything will happen very quickly since there will be a game already this weekend. So I’m delighted to get going. I’ve been waiting for it for some time now.

“If the coach wants to play me (against Hearts), I will, of course, play and give 100 per cent. So that’s up to coach whether I play or not. I’ve been training the last few days and I feel ready.

“My hopes are, first of all, to get into the team, to know how the team plays and just get a good start. It’s always a little bit of adaptation when you come to a new club.

“I want that to be as smooth as possible, and then we have bigger goals – I want to be successful here, for the team to be successful, to win titles, to play in Europe – I want to do all those things. But I need to focus on the here and now, and right now it’s just to get into the group and the team.”

Quick Carl Starfelt debut seems likely at Celtic

Starfelt has already been going through pre-season training with Rubin Kazan prior to his quarantine session, so he shouldn’t be too short of match fitness.

Postecoglou has also shown a willingness to throw players in for their debut with Liel Abada featuring in the first leg against Midtjylland with only a couple of training sessions under his belt.

It seems likely then that our new defensive signing will face Hearts under the lights on Saturday night.

The manager is on the record pretty much admitting the young defensive line he has at his disposal currently isn’t the one he wants to progress with.

The quicker we get Starfelt into the team the better.
