Celtic and Aston Villa met for the very first time on Wednesday night.

What a platform to do it on, two former European Cup winners locked horns in the Champions League as the revamped group phase concluded.

Brendan Rodgers has already secured play-off football, but Celtic’s 4-2 defeat at Aston Villa meant the eight-game group phase ended with a loss.

It was an absorbing contest, from Adam Idah’s stunning brace, a missed penalty from Ollie Watkins, the battle of John McGinn and Callum McGregor and Morgan Rogers’ hat-trick.

If you watched as a neutral, then you would have been duly entertained, as Celtic-daft Stan Collymore enjoyed the visit of the Scottish champions to Villa Park.

Collymore has always backed Celtic on the domestic stage and shown his love for the club, but he was supporting his boyhood team to win here.

Villa got the job done as their extra quality shone through and Collymore wanted to give the opposition their flowers for their efforts.

Left-back Ian Maatsen, for example, over £30 million, more than nearly Triple what Celtic paid for Arne Engels.

Collymore told Celtic on Twitter to ‘enjoy’ the play-off games against, either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich, before adding ‘see you in Munich in May…’, as he made reference to the venue of the 2025 Champions League final.

Idah has been under pressure this season following his big-money move in the summer, but those two goals should do him the world of good.

With Kyogo Furuhashi out of the door, this is the Irishman’s chance to cement his place in the XI and become as important as a Nicolas Kuhn or Daizen Maeda.

Celtic will naturally look to bring in another striker, but on such a huge stage, Idah has shown enough that he is more than good enough to score big goals on a consistent basis for the club.
