Dane Murray has been at Celtic since the club scouted him at just six years old.
Making his way through the Celtic Academy, Murray signed his first professional contract back in June 2019.
Since then, the 20-year-old defender has been hit with serious injuries that have curbed Murray’s development at Celtic.
After impressing in the US Tour last summer, Brendan Rodgers has pitched Murray into Celtic’s 2025 pre-season preparations and last night, the youngster got a start against Sporting CP.
And what Murray did really impressed many Celtic supporters.

Celtic fans are loving ‘bulked up’ Dane Murray after his performance vs Sporting CP
Since impressing in last summer’s pre-season fixtures, Murray has made two Celtic first-team appearances.
But it was what he did last night that left many Celtic supporters impressed with the Academy graduate.
Another Celtic fan @CelticF1rst said on X, “Good run-out for Nygren. Tidy, good decision-making and looks like he’s got a bit of presence.
“Also thought Dane Murray did really well. As well as good distribution it looks like he’s bulked up a bit too.”
That sentiment continued as @rayoneill1985 admitted, “Dane Murray is CCV’s partner this season. He’s better than all other centre halves we have and can play with both feet.”
@ChrisG__67 reckons Murray could replace another former Academy graduate in Rodgers’ Celtic team this season and said, “Thought young Dane Murray looked very very good tonight as well.
“Very composed on the ball, think he’ll end up out on loan again but he still looks a prospect. I’d rather keep him in around the first team this season and finally get shot of Stephen Welsh instead.”
What Brendan Rodgers has previously said about Dane Murray at Celtic
Rodgers clearly likes Murray. The Celtic boss set out clear expectations to the young defender and what he wants to see from him for the coming season.
Rodgers said of the Celtic youngster, “Well, Dane would have started the Dundee game, the game that was cancelled,” shared Rodgers.
“He is someone who I have liked. I put him on against Aston Villa. But he is a young player that’s come through the system. A really talented young player. He had a challenging time with injury.
“But I look at him now, 6ft4, good pace, can play and we need to see if he is able to help us. I think he can. It’s just about trying to get into the team as many times as you can.”
