Peter Schmeichel has started to take a keen interest in Celtic now that Kasper is playing in between the sticks for the club.
Last time out, the Manchester United legend experienced a nightmare evening, alongside the rest of the Celtic fans, when Borussia Dortmund put seven goals past Brendan Rodgers’ side.
Schmeichel was covering Celtic’s game at Dortmund for the American network CBS and, as you can imagine, it wouldn’t have been easy for him, especially post-match when he was doing interviews and providing analysis.
Even though Kasper Schmeichel has made a strong start to life at Parkhead, that game was one to forget for the Denmark international.
But sometimes, it’s about how you pick yourself up and react because the whole team did just that out in Italy on Wednesday night.
Celtic recorded a deserved 0-0 draw against Atalanta, with Kasper securing a much-needed and earned clean sheet against a team that have been the highest goalscorers in Italy this season.
Schmeichel senior wasn’t at this game, this time around, but Celtic fans will love what he did instead to try and keep tuned in.
Peter Schmeichel watches Celtic’s draw at Atalanta during coverage of Barcelona v Bayern Munich
One of the draws of matchday three was Barcelona’s heavyweight clash against Bayern Munich, which kicked off just over two hours after the Celtic game and the Spanish side won 4-1.
Schmeichel senior was covering the match for CBS and he was live at the ground when he was supposed to do a pre-match segment to studios in London where Kate Scott, Thierry Henry, Jamie Carragher and Micah Richards were situated.
But as the camera panned to him, he was looking down on his phone before looking up and telling the camera ‘I am watching Celtic play Atalanta away’, as he told CBS Sports on Paramount+ (23/10/24 at 7:05 pm).
A bit more relieved, he added ‘it’s going a little bit better’ after a ‘really, really bad experience’ in Dortmund.
“I am watching Celtic play Atalanta away and, as you well know, I was at their last game in Dortmund and it wasn’t a great experience for me,” said P.Schmeichel. “Actually, it’s a really, really bad experience. It’s going a little bit better today. The score, as you can see, 62 minutes, 63 minutes in is 0-0. God, I hope they don’t score now because that would be really bad.
Jamie Carragher then joked that Atalanta scored as Peter looked away from the match: “You are kidding me,” said the retired keeper. “Why do you do stuff like that?”
Carragher added: “I just saw Peter that you stopped watching your phone. You can never take your eyes off the game. It only takes a second to score a goal as Brian Clough famously said.”

Kasper Schmeichel’s stats for Celtic against Atalanta
With a rating of 8.07 from WhoScored, the highest of any of his teammates, this was one of Kasper’s best games in a Celtic shirt.
Added to that, he made six saves during the match and worked very well behind the centre-back duo Auston Trusty and Liam Scales.
| Passing accuracy | Touches | Saves | Rating |
| 71.4 | 56 | 6 | 8.07 |
Schmeichel replaced the retired Joe Hart as Celtic’s number one in the summer and he had huge shoes to fill.
Hart was full of praise for Schmeichel’s performance against Atalanta and now it’s a case of kicking on and reaching the knockout stages of the Champions League.
