Celtic player ratings as two 3/10s stink out Dens Park and only one gets pass marks vs Dundee

Add as preferred source on Google

Celtic suffered their first defeat of the season after losing 2-0 to Dundee at Dens Park.

Brendan Rodgers announced his Celtic starting XI and, again, it was missing Michel-Ange Balikwisha who remained on the bench for Hyunjun Yang.

Rodgers went into the game knowing that Celtic were five points behind Hearts after they dismantled Kilmarnock at Rugby Park yesterday afternoon, so this was a must-win game.

However, pretty much from the first minute, fans could see that the team lacked real energy and penetration as Dundee picked off Celtic on the counter attack to go 1-0 up in the 18th minute.

Cameron Carter-Vickers’ own goal in first-half stoppage time pretty much summed up Celtic’s day at Dens Park as Rodgers heads back to Glasgow pointless.

So how did Celtic’s players do? Here are 67 Hail Hail’s ratings as the Bhoys were embarrassed at Dundee.

Celtic player ratings vs Dundee

Kasper Schmeichel- 5

The big goalkeeper didn’t have much to do. Made one save in the first half but not at fault for any of Dundee’s goals

Anthony Ralston – 5

Tried to link up with Nygren in the opening stages of the game. Had a shot miles off target, but Ralston did create one of Celtic’s few chances. Hooked at half time as Rodgers tinkered with his formation.

Liam Scales – 4

One of Celtic’s most consistent defenders just couldn’t get it right. Misplaced passes and wayward headers. Not one of Scales’ best performances.

Cameron Carter-Vickers – 3

The big American is usually one player Celtic fans can stick their hats on but he was at fault for Dundee’s opener and Carter-Vickers was unfortunate at the second with the own goal.

Kieran Tierney – 4

Tierney looked tired and off the pace. Made a few mazy runs into Dundee’s final third but looked miles off it. Was caught out of position for Dundee’s second.

Callum McGregor – 5

The Celtic captain’s passing was on point, but it was in the usual horseshoe direction. Had a few shots on goal but McGregor never really troubled the Dundee goalkeeper.

Reo Hatate – 4

The Japanese midfielder continually makes Rodgers’ starting XI despite being poor for a number of weeks. Hatate often looked disinterested and lethargic. Created Celtic’s penalty with his shot at goal.

Benjamin Nygren – 5

Looked lively in the opening 20 minutes as Nygren looked to link up with Ralston and Yang. Some decent deliveries at set plays but, overall, another player who wasn’t at the races. Hooked on the 64th minute for Luke McCowan.

Hyunjun Yang – 3

The South Korean got the nod ahead of £4.5m summer signing Michel-Ange Balikwisha and was largely ineffectual, and not for the first time. A dreadful performance from Yang as question marks surround Rodgers’ team selection.

Sebastian Tounekti – 6

Tounekti was the only shining light in this dreadful performance as the Tunisian probed the Dundee defence with his trickery on the wing. While his performance was decent, it was probably made to look better because his teammates were so poor.

Kelechi Iheanacho – 5

The Nigerian has been in decent goalscoring form for Celtic since his summer move. Iheanacho threatened with a few shots on goal and was unlucky not to score midway through the second half.

Luke McCowan – 4

Replaced Benjamin Nygren with 30 minutes to go. But like the rest of his teammates, McCowan was largely disappointing.

Johnny Kenny – 4

The young striker was brought on at half-time as Rodgers looked to add more attacking options to his front line. Kenny worked hard but in the end lack of service left the young Celtic striker wanting.

Michel-Ange Balikwisha – 5

Despite his last-gasp assist in the win against Motherwell, Balikwisha found himself on the Celtic bench this afternoon. Didn’t get the chance to impose himself on the game much.

Arne Engels – 4

The Belgian replaced Reo Hatate on the 82nd minute but Engels wasn’t given enough time to impose himself on the game.
