A group of Celtic ultras reminded everyone of the Bhoys’ trophy success over the last 11 years at Hampden today, echoing an own goal banner from Rangers group the Union Bears last week.
The Rangers fans unveiled a banner at Livingston last week which read, “Two trophies in eleven years, uphold the standards that matter.” It was in reference to comments Michael Beale made about allowing Partick Thistle to score a goal in a Scottish Cup match after Malik Tillman controversially netted their own effort.
Today at Hampden, after Celtic had beaten the Ibrox side 2-1 in the Scottish League Cup final, the Bhoys fan group unveiled their own set of banners poking fun at them, which stated, “22 trophies in 11 years, we set the standard.”
Celtic are the standard
Celtic’s trophy-winning pace has been truly remarkable for a whole generation of fans.
From nine league titles in a row to quadruple trebles and a clutch more besides, if a team truly wants to reach the gold standard in this country, Celtic are the team to emulate.
Everyone has been left trailing in our wake, including Rangers for the most part. That’s true whether they’ve signed new players, changed their managers or cried foul regarding any other factors in the league.
The reality is that Celtic remain ahead of them. It’s uncomfortable for their admirers in the stands and the media, especially because under Ange Postecoglou the players themselves have been so relentless with it. There’s no complacency and nobody is taking their eye off the challenge.
Almost everyone, whether supporters, Celtic staff or players, went into today’s game with Rangers knowing it would be a very, very difficult match. There was no arrogance our part. We got every bit of that difficult match but, crucially, found the way to win.
Even throwing everything they had at the Bhoys, they still came up short. Fixing it will require resources and thinking they may not have available right now.
