Charlie Mulgrew says Celtic star ‘hard done by’ like Liam Scales as Bhoys beat Aberdeen 6-0

Celtic’s squad is getting stronger and stronger under Brendan Rodgers.

That was proven as Celtic demolished Aberdeen 6-0 in the Scottish League Cup semi-final on Saturday at Hampden.

This was a statement win and performance from the Bhoys because Aberdeen have been making a lot of noise this season.

That noise from Aberdeen has been merited and Rodgers made sure that his team reacted in the best way possible because that was ruthless, dominant and scintillating of the highest order.

No one in Scotland can live with Celtic when they are purring like they did at Hampden, not even the second-best team in the country.

What’s even better for someone like Rodgers is his bench and the number of high-profile players he didn’t pick from.

There was a lot of talk about Liam Scales not starting for Celtic, with Auston Trusty, selected to play ahead of him, alongside opening goalscorer Cameron Carter-Vickers.

But Charlie Mulgrew felt there was another Celtic star who was unfortunate to be benched.

Greg Taylor ‘hard done by’ as Celtic beat Aberdeen

Greg Taylor has been a consistent performer for Rodgers, and the depth behind him, especially with the now-loaned-out Alex Bernabei, wasn’t strong enough last season.

But Alex Valle’s arrival, on-loan from Barcelona B, has changed matters for Taylor because he now has a player worthy of starting regularly for the team.

Rodgers opted for Valle against Aberdeen and Mulgrew feels that his fellow fullback didn’t do much wrong to be sitting on the bench.

Mulgrew highlighted Taylor’s recent injury and how that opened the door for the rising Spanish star and he has taken that opportunity since, as he told Premier Sports (02/11/24 at 5:10 pm).

“It’s a hard one,” said Mulgrew on the difference between Taylor and Valle. “I think Greg Taylor is another one who can feel hard done by, the same as Scales.

“Valle is obviously a good player. He’s somebody Rodgers wanted to have a good look at him and see if he can get a run in the team. Taylor will be disappointed that the injury came at the wrong time for him.”

One thing is for sure, Celtic are blessed to have two outstanding left-backs to pick from and it actually makes life easier for Rodgers.

With the revamped Champions League format set to take more out of the players, rotation is needed more than ever.

And this provides Rodgers the ample chance to rotate away knowing that whoever is starting will put on a top performance.

In all competitions this season, Taylor has been rated 7.07 by WhoScored and Valle is just ahead of him with a rating of 7.20.
