Chris Sutton was full of praise for Mikey Johnston after Celtic’s comeback 3-1 win over St Johnstone on Sunday.
It wasn’t an easy game for Celtic, that’s why Brendan Rodgers made a change at half-time by hooking off Hyunjun Yang and bringing Mikey Johnston into the fold.
That change worked a treat because Chris Sutton thinks the Republic of Ireland international was ‘more effective’ than his teammate, as he told Sky Sports Football (03/12/23 at 1:35 pm).
Added to that, the former Bhoys striker thinks Mikey Johnston has probably proved his doubters wrong because he thinks ‘a lot of Celtic supporters think he has had his day at the club’.
You can see why because the player himself has hardly featured under Brendan Rodgers this term, playing only 121 minutes of football.
But during the time Mikey Johnston has been on the pitch, he has impressed and he also proved that in Rome against Lazio in the Champions League.
Mikey Johnston’s performance compared to Hyunjun Yang
“He has actually been good Mikey Johnston, the substitution at half-time,” said Sutton. “He has been far more effective than Yang.
“Celtic have utilised that right-hand side far more than the left-hand side in this second half.
“There are a lot of Celtic supporters who think he has had his day at the club. But he has made an impact.
“Yang didn’t play well in the first half. He has come on and really impressed in the second half, Mikey Johnston. He started off on the right-hand side and then moved to the left.”

Mikey Johnston deserves more minutes
At the end of the day, the best way to answer your critics or send out a message is by doing your talking with the ball.
Johnston hasn’t been rewarded by the fact that he hasn’t scored a goal to put his name up in lights.
But his performances have been deserving of it and his performances are now deserving of playing more minutes going forward – Gustaf Lagerbielke praised his teammate.
With Hibs up next, some would argue he should start ahead of Hyunjun Yang, who is still trying to find his feet in Glasgow.
