Chris Sutton shares how Martin O’Neill would have chinned Celtic’s players if they had Rangers’ ‘brass neck’

There will not be many Celtic fans who will disagree that Rangers deserved their Glasgow Derby on Sunday.

The Ibrox club took their chances as Celtic toiled to cope with Rangers’ press as they ran out eventual 3-2 winners at Celtic Park.

Humza Igamane’s late goal sparked embarrassing Rangers scenes as Vaclav Cerny sprayed Celtic fans with water and Dujon Sterling’s umprofessional social media post marred what was a good result for the Ibrox club.

But it was what Barry Ferguson and his players did at full time that made Chris Sutton share what Celtic legend Martin O’Neill would have done if his team embarrassed themselves with those Rangers celebrations at the final whistle.

Chris Sutton slams Rangers’ Champions League celebrations at Celtic Park

The Rangers players and their fans seem to have found new life after what was essentially just picking up three points at Celtic Park and it is how they celebrated the win that left Sutton cringing.

Sutton wrote in the Daily Record [print edition back page], “Rangers might not do walking away – but they certainly do get carried away.

“You’d be forgiven for thinking they’d won the Champions League at Celtic Park on Sunday given the way they celebrated.

“Don’t get me wrong. Rangers deserved to win. It was an impressive display, especially on the back of getting through to the Europa League last eight against Fenerbahce.

“But come off it – they walked off the pitch still 13 points behind Celtic in the Premiership. If we did that under Martin O’Neill he’d have had us straight up the tunnel and doing laps around Barrowfield all week.”

Chris Sutton calls out two-faced Rangers fans after Celtic win

Rangers fans were at their wits end this season after watching their team surrender to Queen’s Park and St Mirren and lag 16-points behind Celtic.

And Sutton has had a go at the fans and players’ two-facedness after the Ibrox support were heavily criticising the players they seem to now worship after the derby win.

Sutton continued, “To be giving it the big one in front of their supporters on Sunday was some brass neck. It was only a few weeks ago the same fans were baying for blood.

“I know the result and performance meant something.

“I’m not being a killjoy, they deserve some bit of light after a horrendous domestic season. But have a bit of perspective.

“It goes back to what I’ve been saying most of this campaign. Rangers are a decent side but they have been mentally weak and it’s shown in some of their results.”

Look, as Sutton said, the Rangers deserved their win but in the grand scheme of things when he curtain draws on this season, they will end it empty handed.

Celtic, on the other hand, will at least finish the season with a double and with a treble a real possibility, trophy number 121 could also be its way to the Parkhead trophy cabinet.
