Former Celtic star Chris Sutton poked fun at Rangers on social media after the Bhoys overcame their rivals by a 1-0 margin in the Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden.
Sutton was on punditry duties with Viaplay at the national stadium so got to experience the derby victory first-hand and was left impressed that Ange Postecoglou’s side managed to pick up yet another derby victory.
After full-time, the former striker derided the bluster coming from across the city over the last few weeks and months, referencing comments from the Ibrox camp that suggested the ‘real’ Rangers would turn up today.
Chris Sutton can see through the hype at Rangers
He didn’t stop there either, later quote-tweeting an article with John Lundstram’s reaction to the Sunday result. The Rangers midfielder stated post-match that there is a belief amongst his squad they can beat Celtic, despite failing to do so on every occasion this season.
Sutton quipped on the social media site: “I thought they’d at least wait until Tuesday.”
Celtic effectively ended Rangers’ season today and no doubt there will be a lot of soul-searching over the next while as they try to figure out if it’s possible to lay a glove on the Bhoys under the management of Michael Beale. So far, there’s been a lot of hype without much substance.
Everyone, apart from those within the Rangers group itself, seems to understand that doing a lot of talking before they’ve achieved anything has done them no favours at all.
They’ve consistently suggested that the gap between Celtic and Rangers isn’t as large as made out – yet, they find themselves 13 points behind in the Scottish Premiership, have lost all but one of the derbies this season and have been defeated twice at Hampden. Who is kidding who here?
For the Bhoys, it matters little. Ange Postecoglou has his team well-drilled and solely focused on the football itself. Celtic have managed to stay above all the outside noise and get on with the task of winning football matches. While others get bogged down, the Celts are marching on.
