Ian Dennis noticed the Atletico Madrid bench reacting ‘angrily’ to Brendan Rodgers when Daizen Maeda was shown a red card during Celtic’s 6-0 defeat in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The on-field referee Ivan Kruzliak was told to go to his monitor by VAR, which was near the two benches, and as you would expect, both were animated and things were reaching boiling point.

Brendan Rodgers was seemingly annoyed with how the Atletico Madrid bench was trying to persuade the on-field referee to send Daizen Maeda off.

And it seems as though those on the other side weren’t having what the Celtic boss and his bench were trying to do either, as commentator Ian Dennis told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport

Diego Simeone isn’t a saint, not by any stretch, his actions against any team prove that – Ally McCoist slammed the Argentine after the game.

And they showcased that once again against Celtic last night, with commentator Ian Dennis sharing what the bench of the Spanish side did during and after Daizen Maeda’s red card.

Daizen Maeda’s red card

“Brendan Rodgers has reacted angrily to Diego Simeone, he is pointing a finger and accusing Diego Simeone,” said Ian Dennis.

“Now, all of a sudden, some of the Atletico Madrid bench have reacted angrily to Brendan Rodgers who tried to confront the match official as he tried to view the screen.

“Anybody who has seen Diego Simeone and his antics on the touchline. He has got that animated and he is always that type of character, but he has got so animated now that he has down away with the big overcoat. He is now just there in his all-black suit. Looking very, very sharp as never. Just never stands still.”

Maeda and Luis Palma suspended

Celtic have two European games remaining – a trip to Lazio and then a home tie against Feyenoord.

It’s pretty obvious that the club’s chances of progressing to the knockout stages are out of the window, as maximum points will be needed if Celtic want to secure an unlikely third spot.

But it’s going to be without the wide boys – Maeda and Luis Palma – one picked up the much-talked-about red, whilst Palma is also suspended, so it’s probably a chance for a few fringe players to showcase their worth.
