Thursday night was undoubtedly a tough one to take for Celtic supporters. Many may not have been necessarily expecting a win against the Germans, but heavy defeats are never easy.
It was a frustrating night on a typical rollercoaster in Europe for the Bhoys.
But what did German media make of the game and the Celtic Park atmosphere? It’s always nice to check in with our friends across the continent.
There was some fantastic stuff kicking about in Spain after the 4-3 defeat to Real Betis, as we discussed at the time.
Newspaper giant Bild led with the “fanatical and incredibly loud” crowd at Celtic Park, who were eventually silenced by Florian Wirtz and company.
They described the opportunities Celtic had to get themselves into the game too, with journalist Phillip Arens writing: “The game was completely open and wild until Bayer took the lead. The Scots had three huge chances, which Jonathan Tah could thwart with a mega tackle against Kyogo Furuashi and goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky with two reflex saves. Right after the break, Hradecky parried world-class against Furuashi and Jota.”
Over at Kicker, there was a feeling the game lived up to the “rumble in the jungle” billing it was given by Gerardo Seoane in the build-up, impressed by Celtic’s early play. They describe “Turnbull’s fatal stumbling block” as the key to the game unlocking for the visitors.
Online outlet Ran described Celtic as “fighting Glaswegians” who had the better of the game early on before conceding. Like everyone who watched last night’s match, there was heavy praise for goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky who kept out a number of certain goals for Postecoglou’s team.
Ultimately, across outlets, there was fair coverage of Celtic’s performance with many recognising that the team were punished for defensive lapses and gave a good account of themselves with slick build-up play.
For me, it wasn’t a 4-0 game. Some may disagree with that, but I felt it was on a plate for us to get a lot closer to the Germans in terms of the scoreline.
That didn’t make Celtic being on the end of a drubbing any more enjoyable to witness!
