Celtic were outstanding in their heartbreaking 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Brendan Rodgers’ side have done themselves proud as Celtic not only kept Bayern Munich at bay but also gave the Bundesliga giants a scare after leading 1-0 right up until the 94th minute.

Alphonso Davies rescued Bayern’s blushes as he latched onto a Kasper Schmeichel save to tuck the ball home from two yards to equalise on the night but also send Celtic out of the Champions League to win the tie 3-2 on aggregate.

However, Celtic manager Rodgers was upbeat as he praised the Bhoys for their battling performance as the Northern Irishman heaped praised on his heartbroken players.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers said result vs Bayern Munich is ‘not what his players deserved’

Rodgers told Amazon Prime Sports, “It was obviously not what the players deserved, especially right at the very end.

“I know they gave so much to the game. Played with confidence with the ball. We knew we would have to defend, but we didn’t give away too much in the game.

“I thought our concentration was good and denied them space but then we had quality and some great moves and actually had the best chances in the game, I felt.

“So real heroic performance and just unfortunate at the end.”

Brendan Rodgers says Celtic have restored their ‘European credibility’ this season

With Celtic facing up to top-quality opposition for the tenth time in the Champions League this season, Rodgers says that the 1-1 draw with Bayern has restored the Bhoys’ reputation amongst Europe’s elite clubs.

Rodgers continued, “I think tour European credibility, I think, has been restored this season. I think we’ve built up that from last year.

“That’s my takeaway from this season. I think we’ve shown real quality at times. You think of the last time you were in Germany, and the improvements we’ve made now going out tonight.

“I think we found a nice template now when we haven’t got the ball, to have that security and be compact and tight, and then we can play.

“Hopefully, come next season, we can improve the squad even more.”

Celtic can now look forward to chasing a domestic treble and if they get through the Champions League qualifiers next season, then another year rubbing shoulders with the top clubs in Europe.
