‘His card is marked’ – Ally McCoist offers Callum McGregor Celtic verdict in premature Rangers praise

Ally McCoist watched Rangers beat Celtic yesterday afternoon and reacted somewhat predictably.

It was a shocking afternoon for Brendan Rodgers’ side who flopped to a 3-0 defeat at Ibrox in what was a miserable afternoon for everyone associated with the club.

It was an uncharacteristic performance, to be fair, with Celts struggling to create chances while their key attacking stars simply did not find their rhythm.

One such player was captain Callum McGregor who was contained well, it must be said, by a hungry Gers captain for the day, Nico Raskin and others.

The skipper was not at his usual influential best and though he did attempt to get his teammates going, it simply was not his day or theirs.

Yet McCoist had his own verdict on the 31-year-old and his showing.

He pointed towards the Premier Sports Cup Final – which Celts won 5-4 on penalties following a pulsating 3-3 draw – as a second example of McGregor being marked out the game.

What Ally McCoist thinks of Rangers quieting Callum McGregor

And as everyone might have expected, McCoist immediately applauded Rangers’ stars for their decision to stamp out CalMac’s authority as part of their over-arching gameplan.

“The one thing I would say is Callum McGregor’s been really, really quiet,” he said during his talkSPORT segment.

“Certainly in the last couple of games, he’s had his card marked a little bit.

“They’ve just put someone right on him and he’s finding it a lot more difficult to get on the ball.”

Celtic’s one bad day vs Rangers has their fans acting like world beaters

What McCoist has to remember, however, is that Celtic still hold a whopping 11 point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

And that is even after their off-day at Rangers.

It was always going to happen if Gers had won the match yesterday.

One day Philippe Clement is the sinner, the next he is the mastermind behind their victory.

Rangers fans can think they are world beaters again.

But Celtic supporters know the real story.
