‘It’s ridiculous’: Barry Ferguson can’t believe what he has seen from Celtic’s Matt O’Riley

Barry Ferguson lauded Matt O’Riley for his ‘ridiculous’ volley during Celtic’s 4-1 win over Hearts on Sunday.

A man who can do nothing wrong, the 22-year-old is just getting better by the week under Brendan Rodgers at Celtic.

But that first-time finish at Tynecastle is a goal even Barry Ferguson admitted that he can watch ‘1000 times’ and not get bored of it, as he told Go Radio.

It’s a goal and performance from Matt O’Riley that has now become a regular occurrence and he is a big reason why Celtic are sitting top of the table with a seven-point lead.

Eat your heart out Kyogo Furuhashi because it’s Matt O’Riley who is the Premiership’s top-scorer with six goals to his name – that’s why Gustaf Lagerbielke was sure to sing O’Riley’s praises after the win at Hearts.

Bhoys legend Stiliyan Petrov has been in the shoes of the Danish playmaker, as he stated that the upcoming star is now becoming ‘very valuable’ to the team.

And he isn’t wrong because Matt O’Riley can, not only argue that he has been Celtic’s best player this season, but the best player in the league, full stop!

Matt O’Riley’s goal against Hearts

“It’s a ridiculous finish,” said Ferguson. “It’s ridiculous. The technique in that.

“It’s one of them goals that you can replay 1000 times and never get sick of it. It’s a great ball from Palma, but for that to come over your shoulder.

“When you actually slow it down. He has actually caught it bang on. It was an unbelievable finish. It’s one of the hardest techniques in the game.

“If you ask any footballer who has played at a right good level, to score a goal like that, it shows you that he is full of confidence. You can tell in his play. He has always been a good player. But I think his game has gone up a notch or two. He is getting assists and scoring goals.”

More of the same on Wednesday night…

Things are going well in the league, but the points now need to be added in Europe and players like O’Riley will be looked at to take the team to victory.

He performed admirably against Lazio last time out, including his brilliant assist and layoff for Kyogo to open the scoring against the Italians.

More of the same is needed against Atletico Madrid, including that second-half performance, and the three points will come.
