Neil McCann praised David Turnbull for taking his chance and scoring a worldie during Celtic’s 2-1 win over St Mirren.

It’s no surprise that St Mirren, who are sitting third in the Premiership table this season, took Celtic to the wire because they have been nothing short of brilliant under Stephen Robinson this season. 

That’s why the three points last night are even sweeter for Brendan Rodgers and the team, with David Turnbull, who returned to the XI, scoring a brilliant curling effort to equalise.

Neill McCann stated how the 24-year-old hit the ball ’so true’ and ‘stepped up’, with star midfielder, Reo Hatate, out injured for the long-term, as he told Sportscene. 

It could have been even better for David Turnbull had his first-half penalty not hit the post, but that proved to be a blessing in disguise for Hyeongyu Oh, who came off the bench to score the winner and his first goal of the campaign.

Brendan Rodgers now has some big calls to make, with the fixture list coming at a fast rate, as last night’s goalscorer got a lot of praise.

David Turnbull’s goal against St Mirren

“They are different players,” said McCann about Turnbull and Hatate. “But it’s a classic David Turnbull goal.

“McMenamin should win the challenge there. It’s poor. Matt O’Riley does very well. But when it comes to Turnbull, we have seen him do this so many times, not only for Celtic, but Motherwell in his early years.

“It’s hit with the laces, it’s hit so true that it’s really difficult for a goalkeeper to get across – but full marks to O’Riley to keep it bubbling and Turnbull steps up. It could be his opportunity. I know he comes off later on in the game. And he had an easier chance to get his second of the night.”

Keeping Turnbull in the XI

It’s a trip to Ross County up next and you would expect Rodgers to stick with Turnbull in the XI because he has deserved the chance.

Of course, Hatate will continue to be a big miss, especially for the trip to Spain next week in the Champions League.

But just continue to provide Turnbull with the starts and everyone knows that he can deliver the important goals if he can get going.
