James Forrest will be fit for Celtic selection against Rangers this Sunday after coming through training unscathed this week.

Interim boss John Kennedy confirmed the news in his pre-match press conference today.

He said [YouTube]: “James has trained all week. He was just short for the Aberdeen game.

“The actual benefit of having time since then is that it has given us more training time.

“He has been good. It was minor but it is not what you want.

“I have been there myself, when you have been out for a number of months, coming back in, these little niggles can happen.

“It was nothing too serious, something we could manage easily in-house. Hopefully he picks up where he left off.”

It’s definitely a boost for Celtic to see Forrest return to contention.

The 29-year-old isn’t just an attacking threat with ability beyond most of our options, but his presence gives Kennedy tactical flexibility too.

In fact, we could see Celtic change up formation against Rangers this Sunday.

In recent derby matches, the team has been lined-up with a diamond formation, without any real attacking width.

Forrest’s inclusion would allow Kennedy to deploy the Scotland international on the right flank and Mohamed Elyounoussi on the left flank.

With David Turnbull supporting Edouard, it’s a front four that could create the chances needed to see off Steven Gerrard’s men.

That looked to be what we were going for in the build-up to the Scottish Cup game, before Forrest limped off during the rout of Livingston.

Regardless, fans are just happy to see Forrest on the pitch at Ibrox, taking to Twitter today to share their thoughts on the injury update…

In other news, John Kennedy has refuted reports linking him with the director of football role at Celtic.
