Kelechi Iheanacho announced himself to the Celtic fans with a stoppage time penalty against Kilmarnock.

Iheanacho scored a 96th minute penalty to bring all three points back to Glasgow in dramatic fashion.

Brendan Rodgers opted to name the post-transfer deadline day arrival on the bench before introducing him in the second half.

It was the perfect way to introduce yourself and prove that he can handle the big occasion.

Kelechi Iheanacho asked Callum McGregor if he could take the penalty

John Beaton pointed to the spot following a VAR review in which Robbie Deas was adjudged to handle the ball.

Callum McGregor looked like he was going to take it, but handed the ball over to Iheanacho, who told Sky Sports after the game that he had asked for the responsibility of getting the winner.

He said: “Big drama, big drama. [Sebastian Tounekti] made the difference in first half and second half.

“Three points, massive. I asked the skipper to let me take the penalty and he said it was fine.

“It’s very, very important to make my mark on my debut. Hopefully more to come.”

Kelechi Iheanacho can play a huge role for Celtic

The disappointment of the transfer window is in the past and, as the Celtic manager says, they can only focus on using the players available to them now.

While he may not be the glamour signing everyone expected, the forward has proved that he is ready to face the music and, more importantly, chip in with goals.

As Iheanacho himself said, ‘there’s more to come’ but if he can continue to ride the crest of the wave, there is no reason why he can’t establish himself as the main man up top.
