Kris Boyd explains why Celtic penalty award at Ibrox was correct despite Rangers fans’ noise

There have been quite a few complaints from Rangers fans online and on phone-ins about the call to award Celtic a penalty at Ibrox.

Dujon Sterling was punished for handball minutes before stoppage-time, with Reo Hatate scoring from Jack Butland’s penalty save and earning Celtic a deserved point.

Kris Boyd shut down any crying Rangers fans complaining about that spot-kick, including a bitter Ally McCoist, by explaining that Sterling’s arm was ‘out from his body’, so VAR had to intervene and force John Beaton to reverse his on-field call.

“But it definitely hits Dujon Sterling’s arm, and his arm is out from his body,” said Boyd. “It’s a penalty kick. Absolutely no complaints.”

You know it’s a penalty when, even Boyd, who can’t help but negatively bash Celtic as much as he can with his Rangers glasses on, couldn’t even complain about this one.

Ally McCoist’s tears over Celtic’s penalty are brilliant.

What is he talking about??

Kris Boyd is critical of Rangers players after Reo Hatate’s penalty was saved

To be honest, it was nothing less than Celtic deserved because they were the better team during the second 45 minutes.

Yes, that game probably sums up Celtic under Martin O’Neill. Needing changes at the break and a second-half revival to get something out of the match.

But whilst some Gers fans moaned and groaned about the penalty being awarded for handball, Boyd noticed something else that didn’t sit well with him.

Butland initially saved Hatate’s spot-kick by going down low to his right, before he saved again from the rebounded shot.

At the third time of asking, Hatate managed to bundle the ball into the net, with Daizen Maeda and Julian Araujo not too far away.

Boyd wasn’t happy with the fact that the Celtic players were able to react so quickly to the penalty save, yet the Rangers players seemingly stood still, as he told Sky Sports Football (01/03/26).

“It’s a penalty kick,” said Boyd. “Jack Butland might have saved it, we don’t know.

“But it definitely hits Dujon Sterling’s arm, and his arm is out from his body. It’s a penalty kick. Absolutely no complaints.

“Where Rangers will have complaints would be that Reo Hatate takes the penalty. Jack Butland saves it again, and the two people who are in there are Araujo and Reo Hatate to score.”
