The true sadness of today’s defeat to Rangers was that it happened to be a hugely encouraging Celtic performance, for the most part.
Individual errors and a sending off aside, Neil Lennon’s Bhoys undoubtedly turned up.
That’s what makes the failure to pick up a positive result so maddening.
Players such as David Turnbull and Kristoffer Ajer put in a hell of a shift.
Ajer specifically was a stand-out. He was the leader of that defensive line, a towering presence that rarely looked troubled.
On the ball he was excellent too, providing a link in the transition of possession that allowed Celtic to break forward quickly.
He was WhoScored’s highest-rated performer in the Celtic side, making four tackles, winning five aerials and making more passes than anyone else on the pitch with 54.
The Norwegian international has arguably been one of the best players of the season so far. Unfortunately, his time at Celtic may be coming to an end.
Celtic future
Still just 22, he is a prime asset in the transfer market.
With less than 18 months until the expiry of his contract, the club will have to make a tough decision on his future in the summer, if not this month.
If we think things are bad at Celtic right now, just wait until class players such as Odsonne Edouard and Ajer pack their bags.
These fans have taken to Twitter today to share their thoughts on his performance against Rangers…
In other news, Kieran Tierney has scored a wonder goal for Arsenal.
