Liam Scales makes his first-choice case as Celtic fans enjoy display v Alloa

It may just have been Alloa Athletic, but Irishman Liam Scales made another compelling case for a first-term berth as Celtic beat the Wasps at the Indodrill tonight.

Scales wasn’t troubled too much defensively, at least until late on, but generally looked very tidy in possession. Coming in centrally, with Starfelt drifting wide, the ex-Shamrock Rovers man looked accomplished off the ball, and dangerous on it. If you want to see a pin-point delivery, rewatch his sublime assist for Giorgos Giakoumakis.

Yes, it was Scales who found the Greek striker for an excellent team goal. It was just after John Hartson complained about Celtic not getting the ball into the box enough.

All-round, it was an efficient Celtic display, though Connor Sammon provided a scare on 77 minutes. Though the Hoops initially struggled with the plastic surface, with passes going astray, the quality showed. Giakoumakis’ goal from Scales’ exquisite pass set the precedent, while Liel Abada’s effort from range made it comfortable before half-time.

Although Ange Postecoglou will have some concerns; notably knocks for Abada, Callum McGregor and Yosuke Ideguchi, who had a very decent first full start in the Green and White, he’ll have been suitably impressed by Liam Scales.

In what was a routine cup win for Celtic, several players had decent performances. The ultimate goal, though, was seeing through this potentially tricky cup tie with minimal fuss. Excelling while getting minutes in the legs, though, is a bonus. With his deliveries and aggressive play, Scales fit the bill there.

Though the Irishman is second choice, he’s contributed from front to back in every showing thus far. Ange Postecoglou may have a big call to make in the coming weeks.

Celtic fans react to Liam Scales performance against Alloa

Liam Scales, who has been called up to prior Republic of Ireland squads, continues to impress with every showing.

Prior to kick-off, he had 2 goals and 3 assists to his name in 9 outings for Celtic. Not bad for a left-back, not bad for anyone.

Beyond that, though, he showed real command in possession, leading his team-mates to free channels, and generally showing enterprise on the ball.

Here’s what supporters had to say about Scales performance against Alloa.

The fans have spoken. Will Scales start for Celtic against Dundee United?
