Martin O’Neill has the chance to set a unique record achieved by no other Celtic or Rangers manager if the Hoops win at Ibrox on Sunday.
O’Neill is already the oldest manager to be in the dugout for a Glasgow derby and has won 17 of his 28 meetings against his fierce rivals.
Celtic have a great record against Rangers after European games and three points would be the perfect birthday present for the boss.
Is the title race officially over if Celtic lose this weekend?
Martin O’Neill could celebrate historic birthday win against Rangers
The Northern Irishman will celebrate turning 74 on Sunday and if he wins, he will be the first manager in Glasgow derby history to win on his birthday.
His birthday falling on the day of a game against Rangers is a rarity for other Hoops managers, who narrowly missed out.
For example, Kenny Dalglish faced the Ibrox club four days after turning 49 on 8 March 2000. He wasn’t given a belated gift, however, as the Bhoys lost 1-0.
Four of his eight defeats against Celtic’s biggest rivals have come at Ibrox but after beating them in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final in November, we already know he is still capable of spoiling their day.
How confident are we for the Rangers game this weekend?
Are you buzzing? Are you dreading it? Tell us your feelings?
Who are the oldest Celtic and Rangers managers in Glasgow derby history?
O’Neill takes top prize for being the oldest manager to be in charge for a Celtic vs Rangers fixture.
He will extend that record on 1 March 2026 when he becomes 74, but he was already the outright leader.
Completing the list are two Rangers bosses in Walter Smith (63) and Dick Advocaat (54) in the list of oldest Glasgow derby managers.
Let’s just hope that the Hoops give him a happy birthday to remember.
