There wasn’t a dry eye in the house at Celtic Park today.

On the most dramatic final day we can remember, late goals from Daizen Maeda and Callum Osmand have brought the title home.

Throughout this season, all of the talk has been about Hearts, but they couldn’t get over the line today. Why? The Martin O’Neill effect.

If he wasn’t already a legend, O’Neill is now firmly in statue territory.

Martin O’Neill on Celtic title win: ‘We could not have done it without you’

O’Neill told the stadium: “I must admit: never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that I could experience those lads up there.

“This is the most special place on earth.

“I think that when there is absolute unison in this stadium, it is a sight to behold. And I think obviously the players have been absolutely magnificent, epitomised by the captain…

“But overall, we could not have won it without you. Absolutely not. I really appreciate it.”

It now seems increasingly likely that the call on Celtic’s next permanent manager will be up to O’Neill, rather than the club themselves.

The Celtic players have played their best football of the season under the Irishman, but more importantly, they have demonstrated their ability to dig in.

In each of the three games in their vital final week of the season, they came from behind to secure victory, If this isn’t a sign of the Martin O’Neill effect, what is?

His status among the Celtic support now firmly secured: a Celtic legend. Every single Hoops player has credited him, first and foremost, as the catalyst for this title win.

We speak for every Celtic fan when we say: get that statue built.
