We still don’t have a reason as to why Vasilis Barkas and Shane Duffy were not present in tonight’s Celtic match squad for the Scottish Premiership match against Ross County.
Neither were expected to start, but both have regularly been found on the substitute bench when not in the first eleven.
It’s understood that Barkas didn’t travel to the Highlands, and there was no sign of Duffy at the stadium tonight either.
However, Neil Lennon wasn’t asked about the duo before the match tonight by either BBC Scotland or Sky Sports, so we’ll be waiting on the explanation.
Injury or illness feel like the most likely reasons but given everything that’s gone on at Celtic this season, you just never know what’s going on behind the scenes.
Duffy was said to have been carrying a knock this week, as was Mohamed Elyounoussi, though the latter made the squad.
The Irish international is very unlikely to remain at Celtic Park beyond the end of his season-long loan from Brighton.
Barkas meanwhile has failed to establish himself as a consistent choice in Lennon’s team. There are a variety of theories on why that is.
Has the manager given him enough chances? Has the Greek international been as bad as made out? Should we have more patience given the challenges of settling in a new country mid-pandemic?
We don’t have definitive answers for any of those questions. Tonight’s absence doesn’t help though, regardless of the circumstances.
Hopefully it’s all cleared up by the manager soon!
