Pat Bonner has admitted that he was surprised to see Paulo Bernardo picked to replace Reo Hatate for Celtic vs Stuttgart.

Bernardo was named in the starting XI for only the seventh time this season as Martin O’Neill decided to switch things up from the last-ditch win against Kilmarnock.

The midfielder hasn’t ruled out leaving Celtic this summer and has the chance to either put himself in the shop window or earn a regular spot in the side.

Why has Paulo Bernardo struggled to make an impact since joining Celtic permanently?

Pat Bonner expected Luke McCowan to start for Celtic vs Stuttgart

Bonner admitted that he was surprised to see Luke McCowan not considered for selection by O’Neill as he believes that he offers more energy, whereas Bernardo’s lack of action could be a disadvantage to the team.

He told BBC Sport: “I don’t think Hatate has played well.

“When he first got into the team he was really effective for Celtic, but now he switches off during games and you can’t do that.

“I’m surprised McCowan hasn’t been picked for his energy. Bernardo hasn’t played much and that is a concern.”

Is this the end for Reo Hatate at Celtic?

Some corners of the media think that Hatate has lost all interest and is pining for a move away from Celtic.

Performances in the last few weeks would suggest that is a likely scenario.

Even Arne Engels’ injury hasn’t got a tune out of him, especially as there is a chance to dislodge the Belgian if he plays well.
