Reo Hatate let himself and his Celtic teammates down with a daft red card just before half time in Bologna.

The Japanese midfielder was the hero of the hour after Hatate put Celtic 1-0 up in the first few minutes of the Europa League tie in Bologna.

But in less than 30 minutes later, five minutes of madness from the Celtic midfielder put his teammates under real pressure after two yellow cards had Hatate seeing red.

And responding to Hatate’s ordering off, Celtic legend Pat Bonner slammed the Japan international and branded him ‘so silly’.

Pat Bonner rages at ‘so silly’ Celtic star Reo Hatate

With Celtic down to ten men, the Bhoys face a tough task to hold on to their 2-0 lead and Bonner didn’t hold back as he sent Hatate a message.

Bonner said on BBC Sportsound, “Oh, he has. He has kicked out, you know, I’ve just looked at the replay. He’s kicked out. He’s caught him on the back.

“So silly, so silly. He’s been booked just what, five minutes ago, and now he’s booked again. Two bookings and sending off.

“Put some real pressure on to Celtic really in this game. One-nil up, but now he’s kicked out, and there is nobody to blame but Hatate for me in this one, what is he thinking?”

Pat Bonner in no doubt Hatate deserved his Celtic red card

Bonner was going to ask about the referee but conceded that Hatate deserved to see red.

The Celtic hero continued, “I was going to say, I did ask you who the referee, where the referee was from, from Greece and but I don’t think the referee had any real option there.”

“Look, it is a booking. It’s not a direct sending off red card, but it is a booking, unfortunately.

“And once you’ve been booked, you know, five minutes ago, then you’ve got to realise that you’re going to be on shaky ground, and do not do something silly to put your teammates under real, real pressure.

“And you can now see the crowd again up for this, and they know that they have a chance to get back into the game.

“So important now 10 minutes to go in this game.”

Celtic did in fact not only stay in the game, they doubled their lead on the stroke of half time as Auston Trusty scored the Hoops’ second goal when down to ten men.
