Peter Grant says Celtic now have a ‘Rolls-Royce’ of a footballer on their books

Celtic bounced back like everyone thought they would against Aberdeen on Tuesday night.

A reaction was needed after the defeat to Hibernian over the weekend and that’s exactly what happened with Celtic putting five goals past the Dons.

The starting XI was interesting from Brendan Rodgers because it was the same side that started in Munich – and much changed from the one at Easter Road.

It’s perhaps an indicator to all as to what is Celtic’s best XI going forward in the coming months after some changes.

Whilst some eyes are on January arrival Jeffrey Schlupp and his impressive start or perhaps the best player in Scotland this season, Daizen Maeda.

Peter Grant wanted to give his flowers to Arne Engels.

Arne Engels dubbed a ‘Rolls-Royce’ after Celtic beat Aberdeen

Engels arrived for big-money in the summer and he was the man to replace the departed Matt O’Riley.

Despite that record transfer fee on the top of his head, it hasn’t affected him and now Peter Grant is labelling him a ‘Rolls-Royce’ of a footballer.

Grant loved Engels’ performance against Aberdeen and the passing range he showed during the game, as he told Go Radio.

“Maybe people will miss this out because Celtic won so comfortably,” said Grant. “But I thought Engels was excellent from start to finish. I really did. He looks like a Rolls-Royce for me.

“He was making simple passes extremely well. He was seeing the pitch the way you see it from the side of the pitch.

“Sometimes, you look above and think you are a great player because you can see all the passes. He was actually producing them.

“Ones around the corner. His movement. His running skills. All the things together, I thought it was an all-round midfield performance from him.”

Engels’ stats for Celtic against Aberdeen

There is some serious quality behind Engels at Celtic, including last season’s loan star, Paulo Bernardo.

But the rising Belgian midfielder has come in and has made that starting place his own, with WhoScored rating his performance against Aberdeen at just under nine.

Now it’s about kicking on, taking his talents a step further and helping Celtic to a Treble.

And then, next season, there will be real excitement in the air because that’s when everyone will expect Engels to take his game to serious heights.
