Brendan Rodgers has been talking up the quality of Cameron Carter-Vickers ahead of Celtic’s opening Scottish Premiership fixture against Ross County.

Carter-Vickers was out for months after undergoing surgery to repair knee damage in the wake of last season’s Scottish Cup semi-final. However, he returned for a stint against Athletic Club on Tuesday night and immediately looked impressive.

Now, Rodgers has suggested he will be building up his fitness during competitive games over the next few weeks. We could even see him in today’s team at Celtic Park.

The Bhoys boss said [The Herald]: “He’s been out on the pitch for four to five weeks, not always with us. He’s still a wee it behind but he can get the fitness through games, as well. He’s a naturally fit boy. He’s been very impressive since coming in.

“I know his education. I know John McDermott, the technical director at the English FA, very well. John was at Tottenham for 15 years, so I know all the boys there that have come through.

“All the players are well-schooled in the game and on standards. I’ve seen Cameron from afar, seen him play for Celtic a number of times, and was impressed. But to see him close up, he’s a very, very good player.”

The comments bode well for Carter-Vickers returning as a firm fixture of the starting eleven in the opening period of the season – perhaps even reuniting with defensive partner Carl Starfelt.

With Maik Nawrocki in the building too, Celtic have three quality options in the centre of defence now with Liam Scales, Stephen Welsh and Yuki Kobayashi all providing back-up beyond that.

The squad is in a strong position as a whole ahead of the competitive action with Rodgers recently signalling that transfers are coming throughout August to best prepare the Bhoys for the challenges on the horizon.
