Postecoglou explains Ryan Christie Celtic absence vs Hearts; discusses McCarthy and Griffiths
Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has explained the Ryan Christie absence against Hearts in the Scottish League Cup today.
Christie was a surprise omission from today’s match squad. He was nowhere to be found in the starting eleven or on the bench.
It sparked fears he could be involved in a fresh transfer saga, given his expiring contract status and recent impressive performances.
However, Postecoglou has confirmed he was omitted due to picking up a knock versus Jablonec on Thursday night.
He told BBC Radio Scotland [14:37]: “He got a bit of a knock the other night and just pulled up sore. We’re in the middle of a pretty tough schedule and those things will happen. So it was best for us to leave him out today.”
So, fears allayed, for now!
Postecoglou was also asked by Kenny Macintyre about the situations of James McCarthy and Leigh Griffiths, both of whom could feature from the bench in the second half today.
The Bhoys boss said: “James obviously came in late in the piece. But he’s had a good week to ten days of training with us and he’s ready to go.
“Griffiths has been working hard behind the scenes and was ready to be on the bench today.”
It’ll be an emotional debut for McCarthy when it happens, whether it’s today or another occasion. The boyhood fan has made it very clear what it will mean to him and his family.
To me, it feels like a great time to introduce him, with Celtic cruising against Hearts heading into the interval.
