It is fair to say that the Scotland national team has a problem with scoring goals. This was evident once more on Friday night, when Steve Clarke’s side spluttered to a 1-1 draw with Israel.
Celtic’s Ryan Christie got the goal from the penalty spot, but Scotland struggled to create chances.
There is one player that could possibly solve Scotland’s goal problem, but at the moment he is out of action for both club and country. That player – Leigh Griffiths.
Not featured for club this season
Griffiths has not featured for Celtic this season, as he deals with a calf injury. As a result, the national team has been denied his goalscoring ability.
When he is on his game, Griffiths is the best Scottish striker around. This was shown in his excellent partnership with Odsonne Edouard that was sadly curtailed when the season ended early in March.
Since then though, Griffiths has struggled to overcome injuries. He has also arguably lost his place in the Celtic striking pecking order to Albian Ajeti.
He is more than capable of getting back on the goal trail though. It is easy to see why some Scotland fans on social media were eager to see him return after watching the national team struggle against Israel.
One fan claimed that even a ‘slightly unfit’ Griffiths would have added something to the Scotland side. Another commented that Scotland would have altered their game for Griffiths, and would have been getting balls into the box for him to get on the end of.
Goals made player a cult hero
It is easy to see why Scotland fans pine for Griffiths. His two goals against England back in 2017 have made him a cult hero. If he can get fit, he could take that cult hero status and make it into a legend one for both club and country.
