Ange Postecoglou wasn’t much in the mood for discussing VAR too much after tonight’s 5-1 Celtic win over St Mirren.
The Bhoys were awarded a penalty after a review showed Richard Taylor had handled a goalbound shot, an offence the St Mirren man was also sent off for. It was clearly the correct decision. Arguably it shouldn’t have needed such an in-depth check.
After the match, BBC Sportsound reporter Kheredine Idessane enquired about Postecoglou’s happiness with the length of the checks tonight but also whether or not he was content that a couple of decisions have ‘come back in Celtic’s favour’.
Postecoglou said [19:58]: “That’s an interesting take. I don’t know if there’s a favour barometer, I’m just thinking they’re making decisions. I had my say about VAR a few weeks ago and everyone came at me that I was fuelling conspiracies, so I’ll let the other managers now run the race. I had my say on it.
“I assume the result of the decisions today were correct. If they weren’t correct and as you say they were ‘favourable’ to us, whatever that means, let others judge.”
Idessane then tried to clarify his question and say it was in relation to previous comments Postecoglou made, but the Celtic manager continued: “When you talk about a favour, that means we get a decision we’re not supposed to, which has not happened to us. The time it takes is a frustration for everyone at the moment but I’ve had my say on it. There are others in charge of that department.”
BBC presenter Kenny Macintyre then had to reiterate after the interview aired that there was no real debate surrounding any of tonight’s big VAR calls.
It was a pretty frosty response from Ange, but he is also spot on. Celtic aren’t getting anything as a result of fortune or bad refereeing mistakes, contrary to some that have gone against us this term.
The Bhoys boss continues to stick up for the club in the best way!
