Tonight already doesn’t matter but Sunday is the biggest game of Celtic’s season

There’s nowhere to run and nowhere to hide for Celtic after tonight’s bruising defeat at home to Leverkusen.

You could argue this evening’s game was always going to be a bridge too far for the Bhoys, up against a quality German side with some outstanding emerging talents.

However, the scale of the 4-0 loss is hard to take and it all puts Celtic under pressure to ensure it’s not three games without a win come the final whistle on Sunday.

Celtic were in many ways the architects of their own demise against Leverkusen with silly mistakes at the root of the deficit heading into the half-time interval.

Our lack of composure in front of goal was also apparent, with a number of chances falling to the Bhoys that should have been buried by Kyogo Furuhashi and company.

There were positives to take away from the performance, but equally, the same old failings being apparent was depressing.

Celtic have only managed to pick up one win since beating Ross County on 11th September, and that was against lower league Raith Rovers.

With Aberdeen waiting, fresh and in need of a result themselves, we simply can’t afford to drop more points.

You get the sense Ange Postecoglou understands that given he substituted Tom Rogic, Kyogo Furuhashi and Callum McGregor off in the second half, resting their legs for the Pittodrie fixture.

Bouncing back from tonight, building on the positives, and securing a win against the Dons would go a long, long way towards building for the rest of the season.

Losing the fixture and going into another international break with our heads down isn’t worth thinking about.

It really does feel like a defining fixture. The match will either push back against the narrative this team can’t get it done on multiple fronts, or confirm our worst fears about the start of the season.

Tonight’s final whistle only blew 15 minutes ago, but the Leverkusen match already doesn’t matter.

All that matters right now is Stephen Glass, Scott Brown and that lot in their own backyard. Nothing short of a win will do.
