Two losers and one winner from Celtic’s Europa League defeat against Stuttgart

Two Celtic players disappointed for while one can hold their head high after their Europa League defeat against Stuttgart.

Celtic were hammered by Stuttgart in the first leg as they failed to get near the German side.

A tennis ball protest set the tone for the night and got more movement out of some of the players than the actual game did.

While Kasper Schmeichel and the defence will get the criticism, there were two others that failed to cover themselves in glory.

Can you see any way of Celtic getting back into this tie?

Celtic’s two losers from Stuttgart loss

Paulo Bernardo

This was Paulo Bernardo’s big chance to show why he should be playing more.

Bernardo is considering leaving in the summer due to a lack of game time but was handed a rare start by Martin O’Neill instead of Reo Hatate.

The midfielder was involved in the visitors’ two first half goals after failing to win a header for Bilal El Khannouss’ first before making little to no attempt to stop the cross that led to the second.

He was brought off in the second half and will be kicking himself for passing up such a big opportunity.

Daizen Maeda

If we could just click our fingers and bring back the Daizen Maeda of last season, we would all be doing it in a heartbeat. Those days seem long gone, though.

Shifted onto the right wing so that Sebastian Tounekti could play in his favoured left wing position, the most we saw of the Japan international was in the first five minutes.

Maeda did nothing of note, again, and was withdrawn in place of Hyunjun Yang, who instantly brought energy to the team.

It is clear that Maeda wants to leave, and it is probably better for all parties that he does.

Celtic winner from Stuttgart loss

Julian Araujo

Even on a night of despair, Julian Araujo continues to shine in the green and white.

Araujo has been a revelation since joining on loan from Bournemouth and can be proud of his performance against Stuttgart.

When Alistair Johnston returns to fitness, would you pick him over Julian Araujo?

One moment in the second half showed his commitment to the cause when he attempted to run the length of the pitch with the ball in order to get Celtic back into the game.

If only there were more like him in the squad.
