Arne Engels is now into double figures in his debut season as a Celtic player.
On Saturday evening, Engels netted from the spot and helped Celtic beat St Mirren 5-2 in a hard-fought and end-to-end Premiership encounter.
That’s 16 points clear at the top of the Premiership table for Brendan Rodgers’ side and Engels is on course to win the Treble in his first season in Glasgow.
| Position | Team | Played MP | Won W | Drawn D | Lost L | For GF | Against GA | Diff GD | Points Pts |
| 1 | 29 | 24 | 3 | 2 | 87 | 17 | 70 | 75 | |
| 2 | 29 | 18 | 5 | 6 | 59 | 26 | 33 | 59 | |
| 3 | 28 | 12 | 5 | 11 | 36 | 44 | -8 | 41 | |
| 4 | 28 | 10 | 10 | 8 | 42 | 39 | 3 | 40 |
You have to credit the player for showing a great sense of calmness since coming into the pressure cooker of Celtic.
It needs to be noted that he arrived for a club-record transfer fee in the summer after Matt O’Riley departed for Brighton, so there was always extra pressure on his shoulders.
But his calmness in dealing with pressure has been shown in his penalty-taking ability and he proved that once again when facing St Mirren goalkeeper, Zach Hemming.

Arne Engels’ reminder to St Mirren goalkeeper after scoring penalty for Celtic
Everyone knows that Engels is Celtic’s main penalty-taker, but he wasn’t initially standing on the spot after Daizen Maeda was fouled and the penalty was awarded.
Adam Idah had the ball in hand, with Callum McGregor next to him and the St Mirren keeper seemed to have a few choice words to say towards the Celtic duo.
The on-field referee, Matthew MacDermid, was having a word with Hemming, seemingly telling him to get back to his goalline.
The ref then proceeded to stand on the goal line himself and had to blow his whistle to call Hemming over to take his position.
That’s probably why, as you can see from the footage below on Sky Sports at 1.58, Engels was seen directly pointing towards the keeper after he scored.
Engels’ penalty record for Celtic this season
You presume many players within that Celtic dressing room would be willing and able to take a penalty.
But the fact that responsibility has fallen on Engels’ shoulders as soon as he entered the building at Celtic Park is a big thing for the player.
| Competition | Penalty scored, saved or missed? | Minute | Score at this time | Final result | Goalkeeper |
| Scottish Premiership | Scored | 45 | 1-2 | 2-5 | Zach Hemming |
| Scottish Premiership | Scored | 18 | 1-0 | 1-0 | Trevor Carson |
| UEFA Champions League | Saved | 41 | 0-0 | 1-0 | Marvin Keller |
| Scottish Premiership | Scored | 90 | 3:3 | 3:3 | Trevor Carson |
| Scottish Premiership | Scored | 90 | 1-3 | 1-4 | Jordan Amissah |
| Scottish Premiership | Scored | 45 | 1-0 | 4-0 | Aston Oxborough |
| Scottish Premiership | Scored | 67 | 2-0 | 2-0 | Jon McCracken |
| UEFA Champions League | Scored | 56 | 3-0 | 5-1 | Dominik Takac |
| Scottish Premiership | Scored | 52 | 1-0 | 2-0 | Craig Gordon |
As you can see above, his record, so far, speaks for itself and the only time he couldn’t convert was against Young Boys in the Champions League.
It also needs to be noted that he had to re-take a penalty against Ross County – which was initially saved – before scoring it, as his overall record stands at scored eight and missed one.
