Former Celtic goalkeeper David Marshall had an evening to forget as Hibernian suffered European embarrassment on Thursday.

As we covered earlier in the day, the fixture signalled the start of a crucial season for Scottish clubs in Europe.

With our automatic Champions League group stage place up for grabs from 2025/26 onwards, we could do with all of the coefficient points possible.

Hibernian had the task of picking up a positive result away to Andorran outfit Inter Escaldes. They failed.

The minnows won the game 2-1 in what is the latest embarassment for a Scottish side in Europe.

Last season, Rangers registered the worst record in Champions League group stage history, while Dundee United lost 7-0 to AZ Alkmaar and Motherwell went down 3-0 on aggregate to Sligo Rovers.

The fresh season brought fresh hopes but Lee Johnson’s side reminded us just how poor the rest of the Premiership is at present.

It was a horrible night in particular for ex-Celt Marshall. The goalkeeper has had so many great nights in his career, including at the Nou Camp in 2004, but he was at fault for both Inter goals.

The second in particular was a complete shocker as he palmed a routine effort right in to the path of Jean Assoubre to tap in. You can watch it via BBC Sport Scotland here.

The Hibees did salvage something from the match through a late Joe Newell strike. That could make all the difference in the return leg at Easter Road next week.

But it was a very poor night for the side from the capital, and Scottish football in general.
