"We want a little bit of revenge"; Carl Starfelt sets out Celtic mission

Celtic defender Carl Starfelt reckons his teammates will ‘want a little bit of revenge’ on St Mirren after the Paisley side came out on top in the last meeting between the two clubs.

Goals from Mark O’Hara and Jonah Ayunga provided a 2-0 home victory for the Buddies back in September. They remain the only Scottish side to beat the Bhoys so far this season.

And Starfelt believes that result adds a little extra something to tomorrow night’s encounter at Celtic Park, with no thoughts on anything grander than three points, despite moving into a national final.

Speaking to The Scottish Daily Mail [17/01 print edition, page 69] after Saturday’s semi-final, Starfelt said: “We have to forget about the final now and concentrate on the league matches. The next game is the most important one and that is the way you have to look at it if you want to fight in all competitions.

“The full focus is on Wednesday and St Mirren now. We will try to win that game because there is plenty to play for in the league, so we need to be really focused on that.

“St Mirren were the last team to beat us in the league, so we want a little bit of revenge. We want to win every game. That’s how it is, but maybe a little bit more this one because of what happened last time. We were very disappointed after that game.”

If Celtic aren’t at their best tomorrow then St Mirren could well spring another surprise, even if playing at Paradise is a more daunting prospect for them. We’ve seen before how difficult it can be to break teams down on an off night.

Both James Forrest and Ange Postecoglou went against the ‘revenge’ narrative in today’s media conferences, but it’s clear that at least one person in the squad wants to prove a point and there are likely more!

But the message from the leaders in the dressing room will be to solely focus on their own tasks. If they do that – without thinking too much about that loss in September – the Bhoys should have enough to win.
