Wilfried Nancy claims Celtic defeat vs Motherwell was ‘not a surprise’

What a miserable end to 2025 that was.

Celtic have slumped to a 2-0 defeat against Motherwell at Fir Park… and yes, it really was that bad.

Wilfried Nancy’s side barely laid a glove on the Steelmen in the first half, and they were lucky to make it into the break at just a goal down.

In the second, any chance of a comeback was quickly quashed when a Kasper Schmeichel error allowed the hosts to double their lead.

Nancy has been talking after his fifth defeat in seven games in charge at Celtic.

Nancy made four changes from the team that beat Livingston, mentioning the need for ‘freshness’ in the side.

But there was only one team looking lively out there.

And for Nancy, speaking to Premier Sports after the game, the result was not a surprise, given what he’d seen of Motherwell as a team.

He said: “No, it’s not a surprise. I know where we are. I know what we have to improve.

“And I know, also, the team that we faced. Now, I have to make choices. For this one, this is tough. This is the reality.

“But I think that we’re gonna get better, because there are certain things that we need to improve.

“At certain moments we need to be more difficult to beat individually. And for me, this is something that we need to improve a little bit more.

“Collectively, also, we faced a good team. I watched the game at Celtic Park, also – they played really well.

“But again, tonight, we didn’t create too much. The only disappointment that I have? The two goals. I would’ve preferred to have this kind of goal the other way.

“Because the throw in, the first one, and the second one was a mistake that we made.”

The result leaves Celtic three points behind Hearts and three points ahead of Rangers in the table.
