If you’re attending Saturday’s match at Celtic Park and sit in the lower tier of the Jock Stein stand, chances are you’ll come across leaflets promoting a campaign that could bring significant transformation to the stadium.
‘The Celtic End’ project has been launched by fan groups hoping to introduce a large standing section behind the goal at the traditional Celtic end of Parkhead.
It’s hoped by campaigners that Celtic will install a standing section that houses many more fans than the 2,700 which currently fit into the North Curve area of the stadium – helping to create an ever better atmosphere to cheer on the team.
Obviously, this will require in-depth consultation with season ticket holders who already sit in the Jock Stein stand.
As an introduction, 8,000 leaflets will be distributed across the stand tomorrow in an effort to inform people of the aims of their efforts and why they think it’s needed.
The campaign was launched online today but it will be far more significant to engage with those attending matches on a regular basis in that section of the stadium
It’s stated that, ideally, there’ll eventually be a standing section in the lower and upper tier of the Jock Stein stand, but the focus is on making progress in the lower tier initially.
Clearly, there would be a number of potential hurdles to overcome including permission from Glasgow City Council, relocation of long-in-place fans, a hospitality section already being housed there as well as the club itself having the will to finance such an endeavour.
However, the campaigners only ask for one thing right now – an open mind – so it’ll be interesting to see how this is received by the wider support over the coming months.
Theoretically, it could take the atmosphere and spectacle at Celtic Park to a new level.
