Aberdeen make bizarre SFA request in amusing meltdown; puts Celtic grievances into context

Aberdeen are refusing to take no for an answer in a growing spat with the SFA.

The Pittodrie side, who will face Celtic one more time this season, are incensed after Scottish football’s governing body added a further game to midfielder Graeme Shinnie‘s ban for what was deemed a frivolous appeal.

Shinnie was sent off last weekend against Ross County and is set to miss four games after the SFA’s judgement. (BBC)

But Aberdeen aren’t taking that punishment lying down and, last night, released a strong-worded statement.

“Scottish FA rules prohibit us from commenting publicly on such decisions,” Aberdeen wrote.

“But having been accused of presenting a frivolous appeal our supporters need to know that this is not only insulting to the club but grossly unfair and entirely untrue.

“To add a further match ban seems ridiculously harsh and unnecessary.”

They also bizarrely requested that the SFA review their appeal again, but with a new panel in place.

It’s a pretty overzealous reaction, particularly when Shinnie’s red card appeared to be the correct decision in the first place. (Sky Sports)

Shinnie could now miss his side’s game against Ange Postecoglou’s Hoops, depending on how the post-split fixtures come out.

But more interestingly from a Hoops point of view, you really have to consider what the reaction would have been like had Celtic released such an enraged statement.

Celtic have raised concerns with the SFA about VAR on a few occasions this season, most notably after the derby draw at Ibrox at the start of the year.

But the topic was always handled adeptly by Postecoglou in the media, and we certainly didn’t send out any ridiculously-worded statements.

While many supporters would like Ange and the club to call out decisions made against us at times, it’s clear that isn’t the way we’re going to operate.

We’ll win, draw and lose with class. But it’s almost always the former.
