Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers may not play too much more football this season as the club look at the big picture.
The American has been an imperious presence since being signed by Ange Postecoglou, and will be seen as a contender for the various player of the year awards this year.
Yet, it appears that he has performed well while carrying some injury concerns in recent months.
He missed Sunday’s win at Kilmarnock, and while he was an ever-present in the 12 games prior to that, he did also sit out a few matches at the start of 2023.
Carter-Vickers missed out on the most recent USA international squad due to some sort of issue, and now it appears that Celtic might be about to take decisive action.
As reported by the Daily Record, Carter-Vickers “could” go for surgery after next weekend’s Scottish Cup semi-final against Rangers.
The report also says that he is in line to return against Motherwell in the Premiership this weekend.
While there’s not a great deal of definitive information in the article, reporter Scott Burns can be viewed as a reliable source for stories like this.
From the outside, it seems like it may be a case of needing Carter-Vickers for the next two games, and then soldiering on without him for the final weeks of the season.
Victory this weekend will see us needing a maximum of four more points to win another title, while lower-league Inverness CT or Falkirk would await in the Scottish Cup final should we triumph against Rangers.
There would likely be a feeling that we could get through those end-of-season games with a partnership of Carl Starfelt and Yuki Kobayashi.
We did, of course, have a similar situation occur last season with Kyogo Furuhashi.
The Japanese forward sat out months of the campaign after undergoing surgery on his right hamstring.
It was only revealed recently by Kyogo that he had been for an operation (Scottish Sun) but it looks to have been a wise decision given his form this season.
Many will hope for a similar outcome with Carter-Vickers, even if it means we have to be without him in May.
