Adam Montgomery injury update after Celtic loanee suffered frustrating blow with Aberdeen

Aberdeen manager Jim Goodwin has given an update on Celtic youngster Adam Montgomery after he hobbled off against Dundee United on Saturday with an injury.

Montgomery was hooked in added time at what looked like a bizarre sub on paper. However, Adam had clearly picked up an injury as he struggled his way off the pitch.

The loanee is beginning to make an impression at Pittodrie after a slow start. He’s now started both of Aberdeen’s games under new manager Goodwin.

And, thnakfully, his injury doesn’t look as though it’s going to be anything too serious. As he gave an injury update on his squad, Goodwin told the Press and Journal the following:

“Connor [McLennan] has been out for a wee while and has been in and out of training. Obviously he has fitness issues so he cramped up. Hopefully that’s not going to be a serious one.

“With Monty, we don’t know if it was cramp or a slight strain. I’m hoping it is just cramp and he will take a couple of days to recover. I thought both of them were very, very good.”

Adam Montgomery still seeing minutes at Aberdeen despite managerial change

It’s a credit to Montgomery that he’s still impressing enough in training to be handed minutes by Goodwin. The managerial change could’ve been a major blow to him given it was Stephen Glass who brought him in on loan from Parkhead.

But instead, Adam has stuck to his task and is still featuring on a regular basis for the Dons. So much so that he’s been the club’s first-choice left-back since the new boss came in. An assist at Fir Park last week will also have helped his cause.

On Saturday, he performed in front of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson too, who took in the game after a statue of him was unveiled at Pittodrie last week. With Pittodrie absolutely packed, it was another big occasion for Montgomery.

Unfortunately, he didn’t get the result he was after, but Ange Postecoglou will be extremely pleased to see him continuing to plug away in the first-team.

The last thing Montgomery needed was to go to Aberdeen and play second fiddle to anyone. It’s not the reason he’s in the Granite City in the first place. The idea is that he gains regular first-team exposure and is more equipped to make an impact at Celtic Park in the summer.

Time will tell whether that’s going to be the case. But for now, it’s pleasing to see that his injury blow doesn’t look too severe.
