Alan Brazil sends Jose Mourinho Celtic message as he shuts down Rangers claim

Jose Mourinho will be in Glasgow this week, a place Celtic have dominated for over a decade now.

But rather than visit the home of the champions, Celtic Park, the outspoken manager will be at Ibrox as Fenerbahce face Rangers in the second leg of their Europa League tie.

Mourinho has history with Scotland, having started his coaching badges in the country and a past relationship with Celtic manager, Brendan Rodgers.

When the 62-year-old first arrived on British soil in 2004, he was appointed manager of Chelsea and 12 months later, he brought in a fresh-faced Rodgers to take charge of the London club’s academy.

Fast forward to the present and Rodgers has forged an outstanding career and Mourinho has gone on to become one of the greatest managers of all time.

But could the self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ go on to manage the might of Celtic one day, or even in Scotland and on the other side?

Alan Brazil tells Jose Mourinho to pick Celtic over Rangers

Not that Celtic need a change because everything is going swimmingly well under Rodgers, but Mourinho didn’t rule out managing in Glasgow.

With the San Francisco 49ers looking to take over Rangers, some feel that could open a door for Mourinho, but Alan Brazil has swiftly shut that down.

When reacting to Mourinho’s comments, the Celtic-daft pundit made it clear that if he does come to Glasgow, then there is only one place to join, as he told talkSPORT.

“Don’t even think of going there, Jose,” said Brazil about Mourinho possibly becoming Rangers boss. “There is only one place to go. Don’t even think about it.”

Presenter and Celtic fan Shebahn Aherne responded: “The thing is, Brendan Rodgers has had a really good season. Celtic have been brilliant this season.”

Brazil added: “Oh, he is going nowhere.” Before Aherne stated: “Barry Ferguson, we know is manager until the end of the season for Rangers. I doubt that there isn’t a longevity plan there for Barry, anyway -Is Rangers not his (Mourinho’s) kind of club? Right now?”

Brazil then stated: “No, Jose is a good guy.” Before Aherne added: “Look what he did with Roma. Where he is now with Fenerbahce. You could see him at an iconic club. Somebody like him going in.”

Brazil added: “Steady. No, I don’t know what you mean – it would be interesting if he was. We don’t know what Brendan is going to do at Celtic. But Rangers clearly need something – but he will remember Seville when Porto beat Celtic and the Celtic support there was amazing.”

‘Unbelievable’ Celtic and Porto UEFA Cup final in 2003

One of the other connections Mourinho has with Celtic stems back to 2003 and that showdown in Seville.

Martin O’Neill was in charge of the Hoops then, as Mourinho’s Porto beat Celtic in the UEFA Cup final and it was a heartbreaking moment for the Glasgow giants.

It has probably been made better by what Mourinho has achieved in his career and the fact that he would win the Champions League 12 months later, as Brazil recalled the ‘unbelievable’ support from Celtic for that game.

“Jose is a top guy and a lovely guy,” said Brazil. “Seville. Porto-Celtic. What a final that was. 100,000 Celtic fans were there.

“It was unbelievable. You couldn’t get a flight from anywhere in the UK into Spain. You had to fly out to Germany and fly back in. It was unbelievable. He was there. What a game it was. Porto won.”
