If you’ve been living under a rock this week, Jose Mourinho has been in the news.

The box office Fenerbahce manager has had plenty to say before and after watching his side compete against Rangers in the Europa League last 16.

Rangers managed to win 3-1 against Fenerbahce in the first leg on Thursday evening as they cling on to their last hope of winning a major trophy this season.

But Celtic fans were more interested in what Mourinho had to say before the match at his press conference on Wednesday in Istanbul.

The former Chelsea and Real Madrid manager was asked by a Scottish reporter if he sees himself managing one of Celtic or Rangers one day.

Mourinho admitted he is happy in his current role as Fenerbahce boss but did say in reference to the future, ‘why not?’

Mourinho pointed towards the passion for football in Scotland and that is something he would be able to get on board with.

He also labelled Rodgers a “fantastic coach” having worked with him in the past at Chelsea across his illustrious first spell at Stamford Bridge.

Rodgers replies to Mourinho’s Celtic comments

Rodgers has now responded to what Mourinho said on Wednesday as he previewed Celtic’s Scottish Cup clash with Hibs on Sunday.

The Northern Irishman was in jokey spirits and thinks the Scottish press would much rather listen to Mourinho than his “boring” self every week.

Initially asked if he could imagine his old colleague and rival Mourinho managing in Scottish football one day, Rodgers replied with a smile: “Well, I’ve heard he’s taken my job!”

“So yes, he’s a great man, you guys would love him up here, plenty of headlines for you, instead of the boring Irishman that’s sat here. But no, he’s good value, Jose and obviously a top manager.

Asked if he would bring calm to the game in Scotland, Rodgers wasn’t falling for the trap. He responded: “Listen, I will give you no headlines! I think you know the answers.”

What Mourinho said about Celtic this week

As alluded to, the legendary Portuguese manager was put on the spot as he was asked if the Celtic or Rangers manager positions would attract him.

Not now, Mourinho stressed, but perhaps in the future. Here’s word for word what the 62-year-old said: “In this moment, no, because I have a job that motivates me and a job that demands loyalty.

“But, why not in the future? People can say that the Scottish league is a league of two teams. But it is a league of passion.

“And, for me, passion in football is everything. To play in empty stadiums and play in competitions where there isn’t that fire of the passion, for me, it doesn’t make any sense.

“Celtic and Rangers, they are big clubs, with big fanbases, big emotions, big responsibility and big expectations. Why not?

“But, at this moment, I have a job. Celtic has a fantastic coach like Brendan (Rodgers). Rangers have Ferguson now, so full respect for them and I am not searching for a new job.”
