Albian Ajeti has hit back at former Celtic defender Ramon Vega after he criticised the striker’s call up to the Swiss national team.

Ajeti has been called up to represent his country for the first time in over a year, but Vega was not happy with the decision of Switzerland boss Murat Yakin, telling The Scottish Sun: “I don’t know what he stands for as a striker.”

Now, the Celtic forward has bitten back with press comments of his own, telling Swiss outlet Blick: “Ramon Vega? Who is that? That is his opinion, but he doesn’t make the lineup, so I’m less interested.

“We have to deal with criticism. This is football. That’s part of it. I can live with it. Of course things can always go better, but I fight and do my best.”

No love lost there then.

In fairness to Vega, Ajeti has had his struggles at Celtic and hasn’t looked particularly convincing in recent matches. Or at least, he seems to be ill-suited to the way this Ange Postecoglou team plays.

Postecoglou’s attacking system depends on dynamic movement, strong pressing and game intelligence more suited to someone such as Kyogo Furuhashi.

It’s hard to see where Ajeti will fit into this Celtic squad going forward. That’s especially true if the coaching staff manage to get Giorgos Giakoumakis up to speed in short order.

Still, Ajeti is more than entitled to defend himself in the media. Criticism comes easy these days and it’s nice to see a player stand up and shrug it off.

Good luck to him over this international break.
